Day 10: Jehovah Nissi
Verse: Exodus 17:15 NKJV
“And Moses built an altar and called its name, The Lord Is My Banner.”
Devotional: Jehovah Nissi means “The Lord is my banner.” This name comes from a moment of battle. In Exodus 17, Israel was fighting against Amalek. As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed. When his hands grew tired and dropped, the enemy began to gain ground. Aaron and Hur came alongside him and helped hold his hands up until the victory was won. After the battle, Moses built an altar and called it Jehovah Nissi. A banner in that time was more than just a flag. It represented identity, authority, and who you belonged to. Armies would rally under their banner. It was a visible reminder of who they were fighting for and where their strength came from. When Moses declared Jehovah Nissi, he was making it clear.
The victory didn’t come from their strength; it came from the Lord. This speaks directly into how we face life. We all walk through battles. Some are visible, others are internal. There are moments of pressure, opposition, and spiritual resistance. It’s easy to step into those moments relying on our own strength, trying to push through and figure it out. But Jehovah Nissi reminds us that we aren’t fighting for victory, we are standing in it. We fight from victory. The Lord is our banner. 2 Chronicles 20:15 says, “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” The outcome doesn’t rest on your ability. It rests on who God is.
This doesn’t mean we are passive. Moses was engaged in the battle, but he also understood his dependence on God. When his strength failed, others came alongside him. That is another important part of this story. We were never meant to fight alone. Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 says, “Two are better than one… For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.” God often strengthens us through people. Community and support matters. Jehovah Nissi reminds us that our identity isn’t in the battle, but in who we belong to. You aren’t defined by what you are facing. You are defined by the One you stand under. Today, whatever battle you are in, you don’t have to carry it on your own. Lift your eyes and remember who your banner is. He is Jehovah Nissi. And the victory belongs to Him.
Prayer: God, You are Jehovah Nissi, my banner. You are the One I stand under, and my identity is found in You. When I face battles, help me to remember that I am not fighting alone. The victory does not depend on my strength, but on You. Teach me to rely on You instead of trying to handle everything on my own. And show me the people You have placed in my life to walk alongside me. I lift my eyes to You today. You are my strength, my covering, and my victory. I trust You as my banner. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
