Day 8: Jehovah Jireh
Verse: Genesis 22:14 NKJV
“And Abraham called the name of the place, The Lord Will Provide; as it is said to
this day, ‘In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.’”
Devotional: Jehovah Jireh means “The Lord will provide.” This name comes from a moment of deep testing. In Genesis 22, God asked Abraham to offer his son Isaac. It wasn’t just a difficult request; it was the very promise God had given him. From a human perspective, it just didn’t make sense. But Abraham obeyed anyway. As he and Isaac went up the mountain, Isaac asked a simple, yet reasonable question. “Where is the lamb for a burnt offering” Genesis 22:7. Abraham answered him, “God will provide for Himself the lamb” Genesis 22:8. In the moment, Abraham didn’t see the provision, but he trusted that God would provide. And He did. Right when it mattered most, God provided a ram in place of Isaac. It wasn’t early. It wasn’t late. It was right on time.
That is where the name Jehovah Jireh comes from. Provision isn’t always about having everything we want ahead of time. Often, it’s about trusting that God will meet us exactly where we are, exactly when we need it. Philippians 4:19 says, “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” God’s provision isn’t based on our ability, but on His resources. Sometimes we think of provision in terms of finances or materialistic needs. But God’s provision is much deeper than that. He provides peace when we are anxious. He provides strength when we are tired. He provides wisdom when we don’t know what to do. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally.” Jehovah Jireh means God sees ahead and makes a way.
There are times when we feel like we have to figure everything out on our own. We try to plan, control, and manage every outcome. But there will always be moments where we can’t see what is ahead. That is where trust comes in. Abraham didn’t have all the details, but he had confidence in who God is. He trusted that God would not fail him, even when the situation didn’t make sense. Today, you may be facing something where you don’t see the answer yet. The need is real, and the path forward feels unclear. Jehovah Jireh reminds us that just because we don’t see it yet does not mean God has not already provided. He is already ahead of you, He is working, and at the right moment, He will provide what is needed.
Prayer: God, You are Jehovah Jireh, my Provider. You see what I need before I even ask, and You are faithful to provide. Help me to trust You, even when I can’t see the answer yet. When I feel anxious or uncertain remind me that You are already ahead of me. Thank You for Your provision that is not limited to what I can see. You provide strength, peace, wisdom, and everything I need for each day. Teach me to rely on You instead of trying to control everything on my own. I place my needs into Your hands and choose to trust You as my Provider. In Jesus’ name, Amen
