Verse: Psalm 23:1 NKJV “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

Devotional: Jehovah Raah means “The Lord is my Shepherd.” This name speaks to God’s care, His leadership, and His constant presence in our lives. A shepherd isn’t distant from the sheep. He is close. He watches over them, leads them, protects them, and provides for them. David wrote Psalm 23 from experience. He understood what it meant to be a shepherd, and he chose that same picture to describe God. “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” That statement isn’t just about provision, it’s about trust. If the Lord is my shepherd, then I am not leading myself. That is where many of us struggle. We like control.

We want to know where we are going and how things will work out. We want clear direction and quick answers. But a sheep doesn’t see the full path. It follows the shepherd one step at a time. John 10:11 says, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” Jesus didn’t just guide us. He laid down His life for us. That shows the depth of His care. Jehovah Raah means you are not left to figure life out on your own. Psalm 23 continues, “He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul.” God knows what we need, even when we don’t. He leads us to places of rest, not just activity. Sometimes we resist that. We keep pushing, striving, and filling our lives with noise and responsibility. We move faster than we should and carry more than we were meant to carry. Then we wonder why we feel worn down. A good shepherd does not drive the sheep. He leads them.

He knows when to move and when to rest. He knows where provision is and where danger is. He sees what the sheep can’t. Isaiah 40:11 says, “He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead those who are with young.” There is strength in Him, but there is also gentleness. Jehovah Raah reminds us that following God isn’t about striving harder. It’s about staying close. Even in difficult seasons, He is still leading. Psalm 23 says, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me.” The valley doesn’t mean you are off track. It means the Shepherd is still with you in it. Today is a reminder to slow down and follow. You don’t have to have every answer. You just need to stay close to the Shepherd. He is Jehovah Raah. And God is leading you well.

Prayer: God, You are Jehovah Raah, my Shepherd. I know I am not alone and You have not left me to lead myself. Help me to trust Your direction. When I feel the need to control everything, remind me to follow You instead. Lead me where I need to go. Teach me when to move and when to rest. Restore the areas of my life that feel worn down. Thank You for being patient, present, and attentive to every detail of my life. I choose and want to stay close to You and trust Your leadership. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
