Verse: John 1:29 NKJV “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.’”

Devotional: Lamb of God is a name that carries weight all through Scripture. It points to sacrifice, covering, and the removal of sin. In the Old Testament, a lamb was offered as a sacrifice. In Exodus 12, during Passover, each household took a lamb without blemish and applied its blood to the doorposts. When judgment came, the blood of the lamb caused it to pass over them. That moment was not just history. It was pointing forward. When John the Baptist saw Jesus and said, “Behold the Lamb of God,” he was making it clear. Jesus is the fulfillment of what those sacrifices pointed to. He is the Lamb. 1 Peter 1:18–19 says, “You were not redeemed with corruptible things… but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” Jesus was sinless, He was the only One who could take our place. Sin separates us from God. It isn’t something we can fix on our own.

No amount of effort, good works, or trying harder can remove it. That is why sacrifice was necessary. But the sacrifices in the Old Testament had to be repeated. They covered sin for a time, but they didn’t remove it completely. Jesus changed that. Hebrews 10:10 says, “We have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” His sacrifice was final. Nothing needs to be added to it. Lamb of God means that what separated us from God has been reconciled. This is where many people struggle.

We may believe that Jesus died for sin, but we still carry guilt, shame, or the need to prove ourselves. We live as if something still needs to be paid. But Jesus already paid it in full. John 19:30 says, “It is finished.” That was not a statement of defeat. It was a declaration that the work was complete. When we understand Jesus as the Lamb of God, we stop striving to earn what has already been given. We begin to live from forgiveness, not for it. This does not make sin casual. It makes grace personal. We recognize the cost. We understand the sacrifice. And it leads us to respond with gratitude, obedience, and a desire to live differently. Today is a reminder of what Jesus has done. He took your place. He carried your sin. And through Him, you are forgiven. He is the Lamb of God. And His sacrifice was enough.

Prayer: God, thank You for Jesus, the Lamb of God. Thank You for the sacrifice that was made on my behalf. I recognize that I couldn’t deal with my sin on my own. But Jesus took my place and paid the price in full. Help me to live in the freedom of that truth. Where I have carried guilt or shame, remind me that it has already been covered. Teach me to respond with gratitude and obedience, not out of pressure, but out of understanding for what has been done for me. I know that nothing needs to be added to the work of the cross. Nothing else could ever suffice. Jesus, You are the Lamb of God, and I am grateful. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
