Day 7: Abba
Verse: Romans 8:15 NKJV
“For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the
Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’”
Devotional: Abba means Father. Not in a distant or formal way, but in a close, personal way. It carries the idea of belonging, trust, and relationship. This is not a name people used for God in the Old Testament. It was personal, almost too personal. But through Jesus, everything changed. He revealed God not just as Creator or King, but as Father. In Mark 14:36, Jesus Himself prayed, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for You.” In His most difficult moment, He spoke to God with closeness and trust. That same access is now given to us. Romans 8:15 says we have received the Spirit of adoption. That means we are not outsiders trying to earn our place. We have been brought in. We belong. This is where many people struggle. It is easier to see God as powerful than it is to see Him as personal. We can understand Him as Creator, as Almighty, even as Most High. But to call Him Father requires something deeper. It requires trust.
Some of that struggle comes from our own experiences. Earthly relationships can shape how we view God. If a father was distant, inconsistent, or absent, it can be hard to understand what a good Father truly looks like. But God is not a reflection of earthly fathers. Earthly fathers are meant to reflect Him. Matthew 7:11 says, “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him.” God’s heart toward you is good. Abba means you are not approaching God as a stranger. You are coming to Him as a child. That changes how we live. You do not have to perform to be accepted. You do not have to prove your worth. You do not have to earn your place. Through Christ, you are already brought near. Galatians 4:6 says, “Because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, ‘Abba, Father.’” This is not about feeling worthy. It is about understanding what God has already done. When you begin to see God as Abba, fear starts to lose its hold. You are not trying to figure life out alone. You have a Father who is present, who provides, and who cares. Today is an invitation to come close. Not with pressure or a performance. But with trust. He is Abba. And you belong to Him.
Prayer: God, You are Abba, my Father. I know You have brought me into Your family and call me Your own. Help me to see You rightly. Where I have viewed You as distant or hard to approach, change my understanding. Teach me to trust You as a good and loving Father. I do not have to earn my place with You. Because of Jesus, I belong. I can come to You freely and honestly. Remind me today that I am not alone and not trying to do life on my own. You are with me, You care for me, and You are leading me. I choose to draw near to You as my Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
