Day 14: Emmanuel
Verse: Matthew 1:23 NKJV “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel, which is translated, God with us.”
Devotional: Emmanuel means “God with us.” This name is a promise. Not just that God exists, not just that He is powerful, but that He is present. From the beginning, God’s desire has always been to be with His people. In the Garden of Eden, He walked with Adam and Eve. Sin broke that closeness, but God never stopped pursuing relationship. Emmanuel is the fulfillment of that pursuit. When Jesus came, God didn’t stay distant. He stepped into our world. He took on flesh, lived among us, and experienced life as we do. John 1:14 says, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” God didn’t remain far off. He came near.
This changes everything. It means you are never alone. There are moments in life when things feel isolating. You can be surrounded by people and still feel alone. You can walk through something that no one else fully understands. In those moments, it is easy to feel like you are carrying it by yourself. But Emmanuel reminds us that God is with us in a real and present way. Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” He isn’t distant, He is not removed, but he is present. Jesus also made this clear before He ascended. In Matthew 28:20 He said, “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Through the Holy Spirit, God is still with us today. Sometimes we look for God only in big moments. In answered prayers, clear direction, or powerful experiences.
But Emmanuel means He is with us in the ordinary as well. He is with you in the quiet moments and in the middle of decisions. He is with you in the struggle, not just the breakthrough. Knowing God is with us doesn’t always remove the difficulty, but it changes how we walk through it. There is strength in His presence and comfort in knowing we are not alone. Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.” That is the heart of Emmanuel. Today is a reminder that you do not have to face anything by yourself. God is not watching from a distance. He is with you right where you are.
Prayer: You are Emmanuel, God with us. I know You are not distant, but present in every part of my life. Help me to be aware of Your presence today. In the quiet moments and in the difficult ones, remind me that You are with me. When I feel alone or uncertain, strengthen me with the truth that You are near. Teach me to walk with You daily, not just look for You in big moments. Thank You for being with me, for never leaving me, and for walking with me through everything. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
