Verse: Genesis 16:13 NKJV “Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, You Are the God who sees; for she said, ‘Have I also here seen Him who sees me?’”

Devotional: El Roi means “the God who sees me.” This name comes from a moment that feels very personal. Hagar had been mistreated, pushed aside, and left feeling alone. She was in the wilderness, carrying pain and uncertainty, with no clear direction for what came next. That is exactly where God met her. He didn’t wait for her to get everything together. He didn’t wait for her to come back. He went to her, right in the middle of her situation. He spoke to her, gave her direction, and reminded her that she was not unseen. In response, Hagar called Him El Roi. The God who sees. This matters because there are moments when we feel overlooked. We may not say it out loud, but we feel it. We feel forgotten, unnoticed, or misunderstood. We wonder if what we are walking through even matters. El Roi reminds us that God sees it all. Psalm 33:18 says, “Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy.” Psalm 139:1 says, “O Lord, You have searched me and known me.” There is nothing in your life that escapes His attention. He sees the things others miss.

He sees the quiet struggles and the prayers you have yet to be spoken out loud. The moments when you are trying to stay steady but feel worn down. He sees the faith it takes just to keep going. He doesn’t just see; He cares. 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” God is not distant or detached. He is attentive and involved. What matters to you matters to Him. El Roi also reminds us that we are never alone. Even in seasons where it feels quiet, even when answers seem delayed, God is still present. Hagar was in the wilderness, but she was not abandoned. You may be in a season that feels uncertain or isolating, but you are not unseen. God is aware of where you are, what you are carrying, and what you need. Sometimes we think we have to get God’s attention. But El Roi shows us that He is already paying attention. Today is a reminder that you are seen. Not in a distant way, but personally. Fully. Completely. He is El Roi. And He sees you.

Prayer: God, You are El Roi, the One who sees me. Thank You for not overlooking or forgetting me. You see every part of my life, even the things I have never said out loud. You see the struggles, the questions, and the moments when I feel alone. Help me to trust that You are present, even when I don’t feel it. Remind me that You always care about what I am walking through. I bring my thoughts, my worries, and my burdens to You today. Thank You for seeing me, knowing me, and staying with me.
