Day 11: Jehovah Shalom
Verse: Judges 6:24 NKJV
“So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The Lord Is Peace.”
Devotional: Jehovah Shalom means “The Lord is peace.” This name was given in a moment when peace felt far from reality. In Judges 6, Gideon was living in fear. The Midianites had oppressed Israel for years, and Gideon was hiding while trying to survive. It wasn’t a season of confidence or strength. It was a season of uncertainty. That is exactly where God met him. The Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon and called him a mighty man of valor. Gideon certainly didn’t feel like that. Nothing about his situation matched what God was saying. But God wasn’t speaking based on Gideon’s current condition or situation. He was speaking from His perspective. Gideon’s first response was fear. He realized he had encountered God and thought it might cost him his life. But God spoke clearly in Judges 6:23, “Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die.” In that moment, before anything changed around him, Gideon experienced peace from God. So, he built an altar and called it Jehovah Shalom. This is important. God didn’t remove the situation first. He gave peace in the middle of it. That is often how God works. We tend to think peace comes when everything settles down. When the problem is resolved, when the pressure lifts, when the answer comes.
But Jehovah Shalom shows us that peace isn’t found in circumstances. It is found in God. John 14:27 says, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.” The peace God gives us is different. It isn’t based on what is happening around us, it’s rooted in who He is. Philippians 4:6–7 says, “Be anxious for nothing… and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” This kind of peace doesn’t always make sense. It shows up even when situations are still uncertain. That is what Gideon experienced. The enemy was still there. The battle had not yet been fought. But something shifted in Gideon. He encountered God and received peace before the victory, before his situation changed. Jehovah Shalom reminds us that peace is not something we have to create or chase. It’s something we receive. When we come to God, when we trust Him, when we place what we are carrying into His hands; His peace begins to guard us. It steadies us. It keeps us from being overwhelmed. Today, you may be in a situation that feels unsettled. There may be questions you don’t have answers to yet. Jehovah Shalom isn’t waiting for everything to be resolved before giving you peace. He offers it right now.
Prayer: God, You are Jehovah Shalom, my peace. Your peace is not dependent on my circumstances. I bring to You the areas of my life that feel unsettled and uncertain. The places where fear tries to take over. I don’t want to carry that on my own. Help me to receive Your peace today. Even if nothing around me changes, let something shift in me. Guard my heart and my mind with Your presence. Teach me to trust You more and to rest in who You are. You are steady, You are faithful, and You are my peace. I choose to receive that today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
